Last week I loaded up my fathers old Remington 870 Wingmaster and headed over to Oley Valley Fish and Game
for my first attempt at shooting Sporting Clays. While I had loads of fun, I didn’t shoot very well.
In the week between my first time out and my second trip, I watched a variety of Youtube videos on clay shooting. I used those videos to determine a break zone and focus more on making the shot. The end result was about the same number of clays broken as my first trip, although I felt as though my shooting improved. I felt more confident in my ability to break the first clay. My major problem was getting on the second clay and making the shot. It was here that the vast majority of my shots missed.
Another change I made this trip was the barrel of my fathers Remington 870 Wingmaster. Last week I was using a 28 inch modified barrel. This week I switched the barrel over to a 30 inch modified trap barrel. The extra two inches of barrel and the white front sight post made getting on clays a bit easier.
I had a great time shooting and look forward to my next trip out. I’d love to get some video of my shooting and plan on looking into some sort of head mounted camera. With it I would like to try and share what I see when I pull the trigger.

Sounds like a fun time. It can take a while to get into the swing of sporting clays. The buddy I got hooked into cigars again and I were lookingat starting to shoot again, to get ready for hunting season, and also for the camaraderie I’ve always found at the range.
It is funny, that first shot feels like I have all the time in the world to make. Swinging the gun to locate and make the second shot is where my trouble comes from. Given time I’m sure I get the hang of it and things will become even more fun.
Hunting is something I’ve always wanted to do but have never done. My biggest fear with hunting is making a good shot, then screwing up the gutting process and ruining the meat. I’ve got a couple cigar smoking, hunter friends that I might just have to ask to take me out sometime.
