Hamburg Fish & Game: Thursday 3D Archery

It pains me to say it but, the outdoor 3D Archery Season is quickly coming to a close. As a result, I’m trying to get out to as many archery shoots as I can. Fortunately, Hamburg Fish & Game is relatively close to home and my daughter enjoys spending time at the club.

Just like last week, my daughter and I headed out to the club to spend some quality time in the woods. I didn’t think it was possible but my daughter had even more fun this week. In fact, it was all she talked about during the car ride home. Even better yet, the strangest thing happened first thing this morning. As I was getting ready for work, I heard my daughter laughing. I went in to check on her and she was laughing in her sleep. As I turned to walk out of the room, she sat up, rubbing her eyes, and asked me if the animals were still sleeping (a reference to putting away the targets last night). I can’t express how happy it makes me to see my daughter so excited about one of my hobbies.

The shoot itself was a lot of fun. I had the pleasure of shooting the course with Zena and was impressed with how well she shot. There was a problem on the first target and her arrow went low, missing the foam animal. At that moment I thought maybe I had a chance at keeping up with her. I was wrong, from that point on her shots were solid and outscored mine far more often than not. My daughter seemed to enjoy Zena’s company as well and was thrilled that she could pull Zena’s arrows for her.

Target distances this week ranged from as close as 17 yards out to about 34 yards. Very few targets were spot on with one of my sight pins and it was good practice to hold high or low, depending on the yardage. It was probably a testament to how fun the shoot was but it seemed to be over much too quickly.

After we were finished, my daughter spent some time running around in the grass while I chatted about different clubs in the area. Just before I was ready to say my goodbyes, my daughter volunteered us to help cleanup the course. We walked through the course and I picked her up so that she could reach the pink trail markers in the trees. She seemed to have just as much fun searching for the pink ribbons as she did ‘hunting deer’.

Its a real shame that 3D Archery Season is almost over. I’m having a blast with my daughter and am not ready to call it quits for the season. I’m still on the lookout for a local club with a permanent outdoor walking course for member use. When I find one, I’d like to join so that my daughter and I can continue our outings. In the meantime, I may need to begin looking into indoor leagues. I’m just afraid that my daughter won’t find it as fun being cooped up in a clubhouse while we shoot indoors (I really think she enjoys the adventure of walking trough the woods).
