Over the last couple of years I’ve been a member at a couple of different health clubs. First it was Final Results Fitness, then it was Planet Fitness some years later, and now I’m a proud member of Anytime Fitness.
In the time that I’ve been a member of these fitness clubs, the busiest time of year was always around the New Year. People would come in, in waves, to sign up and make good on their New Years Resolutions. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t among the crowd a least once.
The building would be packed at all hours of the day. Standing in line to use a machine or timing your workout around someone’s use of the cardio equipment was a common practice. Then, around February or March, the traffic would die down and things would return to normal.
Since I joined Anytime Fitness at the beginning of May, things have been pretty slow. I could work out anytime between 4:30am and 5:00pm and could expect to see five or six people in the gym when I arrived. After 5:00pm things would pick up, as people came in after work, and the gym would be jumping.
Over the past week I’ve seen a serious increase in activity at the gym. Just this morning I arrived around 4:45am. The usual suspects were working out but by the time I was finished my warm up at 5:00am, there were several faces I hadn’t seen before.
Yesterday I stopped in after work, around 4:00pm, and there were far more people working out than I was accustomed to. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind seeing all the activity in the gym, I was just getting accustomed to sharing the facility with only a handful of people.
I can only assume that the uptick in activity can be attributed to Beach Season. Looking over the whiteboard with member goals listed, several people mention bikinis and sand. I think it is great that more people are getting out and exercising but I’m kind of looking forward to the Fall when I imagine things will be a bit slower.
