Mid-Week Range Trip

Range Trip - June 29th 2011 - 1

Since the weather turned nice and I’ve been doing more shooting, I often find myself traveling to the range on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Because of the way my local range is set up, I like to shoot when the likelihood of others being there is slim. It isn’t that I don’t like interacting with other shooters, I just prefer to be able to shoot from my chosen distance without feeling rushed by the arrival of a rifle shooter. Of course, this all changes when I use another range to shoot Sporting Clays. In those cases we are all shooting shotgun from designated locations.

A few weeks ago I got together with a friend, Corey, to enjoy a cigar at a local brick and mortar store. In between puffs we talked a lot about guns and trying to get to a range to shoot together. Up until very recently neither of us were members at a range that permitted guests. When I began shooting Sporting Clays, this all changed. I learned that this particular range allowed guests to be accompanied by a member.

With the option to shoot together now available, Corey and I worked out getting together on a Wednesday evening. For the bulk of our time, we shot our .22 LR pistols (Beretta Neos and Ruger MKIII) from twenty-five yards. After blowing through a couple hundred rounds, we moved closer and got to work with out 9mm pistols (Smith & Wesson M&P and Springfield XD Sub Compact). Before calling it a night, I fired off a couple magazines from my Springfield XD Sub Compact in .40 S&W.

In between shots, we chatted and puffed on a couple of cigars (CAO La TraviataOpens in a new tab. for me and a Partagas BlackOpens in a new tab. for Corey). After a couple of hours we packed up our things and headed home. I had an absolute blast and hope to do it again in the near future. I’d also like to thank Corey for allowing me to shoot his Ruger MKIII.

Do you have a shooting buddy, and if so, how often do you get out to the range?

  1. Hi Walt, enjoy your comments about your ”new” hobby, hope you enjoyed your ”4th.” Had a question about the cigar you were smoking, when you did this video? If you have time, let me now, thanks. Swede.

    1. Swede214,
What would you like to know about the cigar? It was a Room 101 made by Camacho for Matt Booth. The size is “702” which is Camacho’s popular 11/18 format. In the US, this cigar retails for around $10.00

Jerry did a review of this cigar (I’m not sure it was the same size) on Stogie Review a couple of years ago.

  2. Great Review Walt. I had a blast as well, we def. need to do this more often. The gun of the future was a really neat firearm. Although I felt like I should have been in a scene from Star Wars shooting it!!! Keep up the good work.

    1. Corey,
I think I might throw a Red-Dot scope on the ‘Gun from the Future’ which should increase the sci-fi feel even more….. LOL

It looks weird but I like that gun more and more, every time I shoot it.
