This week I was presented with two options. I could either start recording the episode with disorganized and incomplete show notes, or spend a bit more time tidying them up prior to the recording. The latter option would have meant cutting it close and may have resulted in posting the show later than usual.
As is my style, I opted to just wing it with disorganized show notes. Recording felt like a complete mess but when I watched the recording back, it came out much better than I thought. The episode comes in just over an hour and the podcast is available in both audio and video formats.

Earlier this week I picked up some supplies to make a few modular target stands. In this episode I talk about my plans for construction and how I plan to utilize them.

Walt,
Another good podcast! Just wanted to weigh in with some ideas for a “fun” .22 gun like the GSG.
I have been bitten by the .22 “bug” lately. One reason is just plain old economics. I shoot the “middle of the road” .22lr ammo in the CCI Mini Mags. They are approx $7 for a box of 100 at my local WalMart. Conversely….I shoot the most least expensive 9mm that I can and that is Blazer aluminum cased stuff for approx $8 a box of 100. I do not reload. So, I can shoot twice as much for less than half the price. It makes sense to me.
I recently picked up a Smith and Wesson M&P 22 pistol. Size is very similar to my M&P 9 Pro and I felt it would be a great “trainer” gun. It fits the holster for my Pro.
It is produced for S&W by Walther. It has an extremely similar feel in the hand as compared to the 9mm pro. There is not removable backstraps, but it seems to be sized at approx the medium or large. Accuracy is surprisingly great. I have found that shooting Mini Mags it has a very similar POI to the Pro. I know that .22’s have a tendency to be picky about ammo but I have put over 1000 rounds through this .22 without a single failure of any kind.
Mags hold 12rounds and the down side is that it only ships with 1 mag. Extra mags are kinda hard to come by right now, but I assume it is going to ease up once they catch up with demand.
I also have a S&W 15-22 and it is another quality firearm that is just plain fun to shoot. I pit a simple BSA holographic red dot on it ($40) and it is more accurate than I am. Mags and parts are plentiful and it’s as customizable as any AR out there.
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to give you some .22 info. If you make it to a SLCFSAshoot this year, (steel challenge type) I’ll be sure to let you run some rounds through!

John,
My wife has a Beretta Neos target pistol that I try to take to the range anytime I’m shooting for fun. Just like you mentioned, it terms of economics, it is very easy to shoot. I typically pick up 550 Rounds of Federal for around $20. I have some occasional failures and it is filthy, but for what I’m doing with it, it works great.
I came across the M&P .22 a couple of months ago and have been wanting to buy one ever since. From what I’ve rad, the frame is molded to mimic the medium backstrap. The trigger weight and weight of the gun, is very close to the centerfire M&P. In terms of a practice/trainer gun, it looks to be about as close as you are going to get to a centerfire M&P (which is why I want one).
Shooting my friends rifle just reminded me that I’m severely lacking in that department. A Ruger 1022 has countless upgrade possibilities and is economical, but the M&P 1522 just looks like loads of fun (plus I don;t own an AR, so it would be sort of like baby-stepping my way into one).
Also,
Are you shooting Steel exclusively at York? Last year when I was looking into it (was trying to find a .22 friendly sport a friend of mine could get into) I saw that York was part of a league, of sorts, that rotated matches at a couple of different clubs. One of those clubs was Topton Fish & Game, which is what I consider my ‘local competitive club’.
If you ever get down to Topton, let me know and I’ll try to join you. If you are only shooting at York, I’ll just have to make a point to get up there and shoot a steel match with you.
Thanks for the support, the info on .22’s, and the comment
good show for winging it:) Glad you had a good time at the range and you must have been going massive shooting withdraw:)
Scott,
I forgot how pleasant the aroma of burnt gunpowder was….. it was intoxicating, LOL.
I had a great time playing around with your new rifle. It would have been even better if I could have figured out the sights early on, but it was fun none-the-less.
Thanks
Here is someone’s review (not mine) of the M&P 22 I thought I would shre with you.

York doesn’t participate in the steel league shoots. I travel to Lancaster and Berks for those. I will be sure to let you know when traveling to one of them and I would be happy to let you shoot up some of my .22’s.
